Welcome! I'm Dr. Adam O'Neil (he/him/his), a licensed clinical psychologist and the founder of Atlas Psychology in Boulder. I specialize in working with children, adolescents, young adults, and families through both clinical psychology and sport and performance psychological support. As a PSYPACT provider, I'm able to serve clients throughout Colorado and in select additional states.
At Atlas Psychology, I integrate evidence-based mental health practices with advanced performance psychology techniques to provide comprehensive support for clinical and performance-related goals.
Education & Training
I earned my bachelor's degree in psychology from Lake Forest College near Chicago before pursuing a master's in sport and performance psychology at the University of Denver. I completed my PhD in clinical psychology through an APA-accredited program at Fielding Graduate University in Santa Barbara, where I developed rich expertise in trauma-informed psychological assessment—an area I've specialized in for over a decade.
Clinical Background
During my predoctoral internship at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center and Psychological Resources for OU Student Athletes (PROS), I focused on supporting young adults and collegiate athletes through assessment and psychotherapy. My postdoctoral residency at Commander Counseling and Wellness in Norman, Oklahoma, allowed me to further specialize in trauma-informed child and adolescent psychology, with particular emphasis on:
Comprehensive psychological assessment across developmental stages
Mindfulness and acceptance-based interventions (ACT and MBCT)
Developmental and family systems approaches
Collaborative care with families, schools, and community organizations
Sport & Performance Psychology
As a sport and performance psychologist, I've had the privilege of working with athletes and performers at the highest levels of competition. My experience includes supporting three Team USA Paralympic teams across the Tokyo and Paris Summer Games, consulting with Olympic athletes, and working with international competitors in events like the World Surf League and CrossFit Games. I also provide consultation to professional sports teams and develop performance psychology programs for organizations.
Currently, I serve as an adjunct professor in the Sport and Performance Psychology master's program at the University of Denver, where I conduct research on athlete transitions and the role of meditation in team development. Beyond athletics, my consulting work extends to Fortune 500 companies, where I design and deliver performance enhancement workshops.
Ongoing Professional Development
I'm committed to staying current with the latest research and best practices through continuing education in:
Trauma-oriented and resilience-informed care
Culturally responsive assessment and therapy
Telepsychology and digital mental health delivery
Antiracist approaches to psychological practice
Neurodiversity-affirming care and neurodevelopmental conditions
Executive functioning assessment and intervention
Mental Health First Aid and SafeSport certification
I collaborate regularly with a network of healthcare professionals—including social workers, occupational therapists, educators, psychiatrists, and other psychologists—to ensure holistic, coordinated care for my clients.
Dr. O'Neil is currently accepting new assessment clients at Atlas Psychology in Boulder, Colorado. Contact us to schedule a consultation for clinical psychology services or sport & performance psychological support appointments.

As founder of Atlas Psychology in Boulder, Dr. O'Neil has built a comprehensive mental health practice dedicated to providing exceptional psychological care to the community. Atlas Psychology brings together a team of highly skilled licensed professional counselors, social workers, and psychologists who deliver evidence-based services including comprehensive psychological and neuropsychological assessments, individual and group psychotherapy, mindfulness-based interventions, therapeutic yoga, and sport psychology consultation.
Dr. O'Neil also founded The Clearing, an fully licensed adjoining micro-healing center specializing in psilocybin-assisted therapy that shares space with Atlas Psychology, creating an integrated wellness ecosystem in Boulder. His work with psychedelic medicine began nearly two years ago when a professional athlete approached him about microdosing applications, prompting him to explore decades of compelling research on psychedelic-assisted therapies. Since then, he has specialized in guiding people - in particular, athletes and other high performers - through carefully facilitated psilocybin therapy to support healing from mental illness, enhance mental health, and optimize performance. His personal experiences with the medicine have deepened his understanding of its transformative potential and reinforced his commitment to skilled, compassionate facilitation.
Dr. O'Neil's integrated approach combines trauma-informed care with performance psychology principles, drawing on nearly two decades of experience in psychological assessment and evidence-based treatment, now enhanced by advanced training in psychedelic-assisted therapy. This comprehensive model ensures clients receive personalized, research-backed support tailored to their unique clinical and performance needs.
